Lip Service

Reality TV stars. Instagram celebrities. And about 27,000 people in the US last year.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons(ASPS) reported the demand for lip fillers is growing more rapidly than the demand for breast augmentation. The patients are also trending younger and younger.
The newest fillers for lips are thinner and softer than before, leading to a smooth, natural appearance. Gone are the days of the round, pillow lips. Natural is IN.
Lip Augmentation used to mean an implant or fat grafting. Now it’s a quick, 20-30 minute procedure.
Restylane Silk and Juvederm Volbella (similar products – different manufacturers) are specifically formulated for the lip line and the vertical lines above the lip. Juvederm Ultra and Restylane, a bit thicker, are used to add volume and fullness to the lip itself. All are FDA approved.
Most clinics offer a topical anesthetic or dental block beforehand. The Juvederm Ultra actually has lidocaine – a local anesthetic – already blended into it. Pain is a mild pinch at worst and subsides immediately afterwards.
Avoiding aspirin, anti-inflammatories and (gasp!) alcohol beforehand can help prevent any bruising and swelling. It is usually recommended that you avoid any strenuous exercise afterwards, for the remainder of the day.
While the risks associated with lip fillers are very rare, your doctor should discuss them with you. Infection and bleeding are the main concerns.
This is a procedure you want to seek out a specialist for. Lips are sensitive, delicate and one of the first things people notice about each other. Seek out a Board-Certified cosmetic doctor with experience that can help guide you in the right direction. Lip augmentation is most definitely not a one-size-fits-all procedure. It’s an art.
Now for what you’ve all been wondering while reading this…Who has the most requested lips reported by the ASPS?

…DRUMROLL…

Jennifer Lawrence followed by Scarlett Johansson with Jennifer Garner rounding out the top three(of course Angie, Kylie and Bey were included in the top ten…Of course.)
